I quit.

I started smoking nearly 25 years ago, in part thinking it would make me look older. We have all seen the ads showing a persons face deteriorating with the use of tobacco. The ad had a woman talking about how she started smoking to look older, and with the final image showing a woman looking like a graying shriveled up old fig, she laments that she got her wish. I have looked, but been unable to find an image online. There are plenty of others though, but I really haven't the time for it today. Besides, it is a moot point.

I have sworn off cigarettes numerous times, threatened to quit when they hit $2 a pack, watched my mom, aunt, and brother die of smoking related illness, my own father dying at 43 years old of a massive heart attack. I myself have had several heart attacks, and triple bypass surgery, yet still I smoked. I have control issues, and hate feeling out of control. I can not afford my medications, so how can I justify spending money on cigarettes? Enough is enough. Time for me to take back control of my life. Time for me to take back my life before it is too late. I quit.

I've never been to keen on posting my comments where all the world could see, but your threat to end the life of an innocent little duck was more than I could take!!

So, here is my comment - well...it's about time! Life on this earth is too short to begin with, you don't need to try to shorten it even more by introducing toxic substances into your body. But then you know my feelings on that already.

I thought you had already quit, but obviously I was wrong.

Life is too precious to waste it on momentary things that satisfy an urge that is a need much deeper than the one you are feeding.

I applaud your difinitive "I quit" and pray this is the end of it, not you.

Your friend, Alisa

It has been on again, off again. I go days between cigarettes... then in a fit.. I smoke a pack in 4 hours. Then days between. If it makes you feel any better, I do feel kinda special that you broke your silence Alisa. Guess you are gonna hold me to the promise huh? Shoot. Me and my big mouth. LOL. Great to hear from you. I am still gearing up for the waterfront blues festival.

No way.....Phillip Morris says that cigarettes aren't addictive, so you should have NOOOO trouble quiting. After all, Phillip Morris wouldn't lie to us.

Oh, and by the way, McDonald's reall IS food and Windex does work better than Vinegar and Water......

Hope you kick the habit dude. I used to smoke, and I sure don't miss it (except when I order a pitcher of beer in a bar....which is whay I avoid bars as well.)

Bruce, Bruce, Bruce.... for such an Informed man, I am surprised you did not know that to shed the "big tobacco" image, PM Inc. has changed their name to Altria. Also, if I am not mistaken, if we let our kids eat Kraft Cheese and Macaroni, our $$$ are going to "big tobacco" as well, because, Kraft is owned by Altria. Go figure. I better check my facts, but pretty sure that is what I read.

And... you know that with the wholesome image of Kraft, Altria can't be all bad. Unless you are also a diabetic, (Don't get me started!) and avoid all boxed and prepared foods. Thanks to Phillip Morris, RJ Reynolds, Kraft, and lest we not forget, ME, my health has deteriorated, and my doctors have me not smoking, avoiding alcohol, caffeine, salt, sugar, fats, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.... the list goes on ad infinitum.

I think you could have fun writing about the indulgence that existed in the post war years of our childhoods, and the consequences we and our society is paying for that lifestyle now. Health care costs are through the roof, big oil has raped our planet, and still we continue like we always have... driving our H2s through the Starbucks drive up windows on our way to work. I read somewhere that in regards to the global ecology, one of our leaders once said... "The American Way of Life is NOT negotiable." Sooner or later, it seems to me, we are all going to pay for the excesses we have filled our lives with.

Actually... maybe I should get off my butt and write about it. Nah! No time for that... Happy Hour starts soon. Just kidding.

Glad to see you joined the quiet ranks of those that follow me. Cheryl was getting lonely. LOL BTW... you did notice I watch your tweets too, right? Had someone told me five years ago I would be tweeting now, I would have said I tweeted then, and I already said excuse me. These are words that just did not exist when we were young. Blog, Tweet, EVOO.... sometimes I yearn for those simpler times of days gone by.

ROCK ON DUDE!!!!

WOOT WOOT!!!

Long answer to Bruce there. wow.

well, think of this quitting as an original act of flipping the finger to an authority figure.

the authority finger to big tabacco. STICK IT TO THE MAN!!

I've been quit for 10 years now. still miss it sometimes. And I still note the price of smokes, something like 5 bucks a pack now! grr!!!

but, i will never go back. i have this whole wife/mother/nurse thing going on. and I am a hottie. smoking would mess with all of the above :)
